Faith and Mental Health with Brittney Moses
Usually, I’m excited to tell people what I do for a living, but her question caused my stomach to turn and my insecurities to rise. After weeks of research, contemplation, and prayer, I finally found myself in my first therapy session. In an attempt to get to know one another, my therapist asked: “So, what do you do?”
“I run a non-profit women’s ministry,” I answered, not sure how she would respond. My shame assured me I would be judged. How does someone who helps others find peace, freedom, and wholeness need therapy? Of course, the lies shame whispered in my ear were wrong, and taking that step to go to counseling was one of the best decisions of my life.

The mental weight of all my decisions, responsibilities, and fears in that season of my life became too much for me to carry on my own, and like a weightlifter needs a spotter, I needed therapy.
As I think back on that season, I’m left wondering how many other Christian women don’t receive the mental help they need simply because they are Christian. How many women feel insecure to even talk about their mental wellness thinking that accepting the help they may need is a direct challenge to their faith?
As we recognize mental health awareness month this May, I’m excited to share a recent conversation I had with faith and mental health advocate Brittney Moses. We discuss:
- Why it’s okay to receive mental health help outside of the church.
- Where to start if you’re looking for help.
- How mental health challenges are particularly affecting women of color.
- What hope we can hold onto in the face of the current global pandemic.
This interview is relevant, rich, and enlightening, but it’s also really fun. So listen, enjoy, and share with your friends.
Also, I share a HUGE announcement at the beginning of this episode so be sure to check it out.
Stay well and I'll see you in the next video.
