God's Promise for the Weary Soul

God's Promise for the Weary Soul

If you’ve ever invested in anything worth fighting for, I’m sure you’ve faced seasons of weariness where you feel tired, empty and lack the strength to carry on. It’s in these seasons where we want to give up and throw in the towel. But God in love for us, remembers that we are just dust and has graciously provided promises of hope for us to hold on to when we are tired and weak . So in today’s video, I’m sharing 5 promises of God to fuel and encourage you to keep going even when you’re weary. Enjoy!

It’s almost the end of the school year for my children, and as we near the finish line of a hectic and unique year, our desire to finish strong is always met with the challenge of fatigue.

God promises rest to the tired and weary:

The first promise God gives to the weary is rest. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 ESV)

In our hustle culture, rest can sometimes feel like a timeout when it is actually a gift that God graciously gives us because He knows we will get tired. It’s important when we become weary to accept God’s gift of rest and understand that taking time to rest is not the same as quitting. Actually, rest fuels you to keep going so you don’t burn yourself out. Now the rest Jesus gives is not just physical rest, but rest for our souls. Many times we don’t want to rest because we feel our significance and value is defined by how productive we are. But Jesus’ love for us and the value that God has already given us grants us rest from having to work to prove ourselves. We are already accepted by God. We accept God's promise of rest because we already have God’s approval, we don’t have to work for it, and we don’t need man's approval when God is for us.

God promises renewal of strength to the tired and weary:

The second promise God gives to the weary is strength. Isaiah 40:30-31 tells us:

“Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:30-31 ESV)

What I love about this promise is it shows that God expects us to get tired and weary. How often do we beat ourselves up because we get tired? How frustrated do we become when we need to take a break because we want to keep going? Well, God doesn’t think like that. He knows no matter how young you are, we all face seasons and situations where we become tired and weary. Not only that, He has provided help for those seasons. He promises to renew our strength with His. When we lean on Him and make God our source of strength, we tap into a power that does not run out. We get tired, and weary and faint, but God does not. We can always go to Him when we need our strength renewed.

God promises harvest when we don’t give up:

The third promise God gives to the weary is a fruitful harvest when we don't give up. Galatians 6:9 says:

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9 ESV)

It’s ok to get tired. It’s ok to want to give up, but don’t do it. Do not give into the temptation to quit because fatigue does not disqualify you from receiving what God has for you. It’s ok to go slow; just don’t quit. Harvest is promised not to the fast, or perfect or highly energized. But to those who don’t give up. If you need to take a break or a nap, do what you need to do, just don’t give up because God is faithful to keep His Word.

God promises to replenish the tired and weary:

The fourth promise God gives to the weary is to replenish our souls. In Jeremiah 31:25 He says:

“For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.” (Jeremiah 31:25 ESV)

Sometimes we’re tired because we’re filling up on the wrong fuel. We run to entertainment, distraction, people, shopping, or social media for a much needed break, but those things can’t satisfy us the way we always need. There is a spiritual rest that God grants that we can’t find in any of the things of this world, but only God Himself. Jesus tells the woman at the well:

“Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14 ESV)

As eternal beings, the temporary things of this world will never be enough and only leave our flesh needing more and more to no satisfaction. Often our weariness comes from using all our energy to seek things that were never meant to satisfy us in the first place. But God promises to satisfy our souls with good things, (Psalm 103:5) when we seek Him for our deepest desires and needs.

God promises to finish what He starts.

The fifth promise God grants to the weary is to finish what He starts. Philippians 1:6 reminds us:

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6 ESV)

When you are doing God’s work, it is not all up to you. You are in partnership with God to accomplish His will, but He will do it. He is faithful and has accounted for our shortcomings and fatigue and will fill in the gaps. Sometimes we need to push through and do our part, but other times we need to sit back, trust God, and watch Him do what we can’t.
